Tuesday 10th July 2007

Gabi says: We’ve done a lot in 4 day’s. The highlights of the trip were walking around the village, going on the ski lift and looking at the view. What I’ve liked about Les Gets is the small houses, the views, the shops and their hot chocolate. We might be going to go horse riding this afternoon if the rain clears up.

We’ve had 1 good day with sunshine, but the last 2 days we’ve had rain. But today we went on the cable car and it was raining ice at the top (but everyone thought it was snow). Yesterday we went to an ice skating rink. I fell and cut my middle finger. Jaime and I were playing tag-on-ice and Jaime fell down a few times. Michelle, my aunt, said I was skating very nicely. We’ve had a lot of fun these last few days and I hope that will stay like that.

Chloe says: We stayed at the Breetzke’s house, they dropped us off at the airport, we flew to Johannesburg and stayed in the airport for 7 hours. Then we flew to Geneva, then we drove to Les Gets in the Alps. We’re here with our cousins and having lots of fun. It was a hot day on the first day and the second day it was hot and then the weather just changed quickly. On the third day it was misty and rainy and we went ice-skating and I fell a few times. We went shopping and I’m writing postcards for my friends. My cousins are so cute. I’m missing all my friends so much.

Jaime says: Last night it snowed in the mountains just a few kilometres away from us and this morning it was a mere 6.5 degrees. Talk about summer in the Alps! There is a beautiful lake here (which we were supposed to swim in, but it became too cold) which has millions of tadpoles in it. The village here is very quaint and picturesque and there are flowers everywhere!

Jeanne-Marie says: well, I think everyone has said it all. Wish I could speak French – spend a fair bit of time trying to explain myself (Try miming ‘I need some haemorrhoid ointment’ to a French pharmacist with a queue behind you……)

Really enjoying the food and wine – eating lots of wonderful cheeses and sampling a variety of reds. The coffees and pastries are also divine although the prices are enough to give one major indigestion. I’ve also seen some beautiful shoes and clothes but those are completely out of the question….pity! Anyhow, lots of fun just looking – at least ‘kyk is vry’!!!

Mark says: When we first drove into the town, there was this army chap in battle fatigues, helmet and all, pushing a bicycle. As we got closer, we saw that he wasn’t really a soldier; rather he was a mountain-biker covered head to toe in mud! There are many of them, all up and down the mountain, going up the cable cars and coming down the specially laid out courses. This seems to be the main summer sport here. Phillip is dying to get out, but with the last few days’ rain, there’s probably no way of stopping after pointing the bike in a downward direction. He’s hoping to get out tomorrow. The first day here was stunningly bright – we all got a bit sunburnt – went up the cable cars and had a magnificent view of Mont Blanc, which is about 40 kms south of here. While up there, we saw many para-gliders take off, gradually circling their way down into the little town below. The next day we went up the cable car (after all, we’ve paid a lot of money for a 7 day pass), we could barely see the trees just outside! No para-gliders this time, but sure as nuts, those bikers are still there!
